The Get Knotted RECIPE for transforming your barn wedding venue!

barn wedding scotland

To create warmth and intimacy in a large, vacuous area – a complete blank canvas – you will need:

Ingredients:
• Style, flair and vision
• Lighting
• Props
• One happy couple, friends and family

Method:

The entrance:
• Make your entrance a teaser for your guests by decorating it with lanterns or fairy lights
• Arrange lights as a pathway leading inside

The ceremony:

• Create an aisle using fresh bay trees in baskets or silver storm lanterns to walk in between as you head towards your groom
• A floral arch makes the most romantic place to say your “I do’s” underneath
• Use plenty of candle light to add to enhance the romantic atmosphere as you get married
• Match your chair cover fabrics or bale covers and cushions with the drapes to carry your theme throughout the barn..

The décor:

• Divide the space inside your barn into clearly defined areas – seating, chill out, dining, bar and dancing
• Use colourful drapes to soften the light and create smaller spaces
• Be bold with fabrics and colours for a unique look
• Barrels make great poseur tables and can be great for creating more intimate spaces
• Use lots of glass wear, candles and flowers to set the scene. Group stemmed cylinder vases of different heights with floating candles to emphasise the size and structure of your barn
• Create dramatic groupings of candle holders, flowers and even fruits depending on your style and theme for added special touches to your tables
• Create a seating area with low lighting and fun soft furnishings, such as inflatable sofas, straw bales and coffee tables
• Use wide trestle tables to make use of the space, which will also provide you with enough space for food and decorations
• Reduce vast expanses of empty wall with carefully positioned lighting such as twig lights or LED birch tree lights. Use these at different heights for some added warmth. You can also use lighting to show off quirky features in your barn.

And there you have it, a recipe for transforming a barn into something wonderful. All you need to do now is enjoy your special day!

The idea for this photoshoot has been planted in my mind for quite some time, so when I started to organise a collaboration, I knew what to look for.  Jade Starmore (the photographer) has such a beautiful and interesting style to her work, Rachael Forbes is well known for her attention to detail with makeup and styling and of course, Emmi Keane had the exact look we were after – long hair with a dark complexion.
So with this team, we were able to create the most beautiful set of images…

I am a lover of anything and everything wild, foraged and full of life. So when I was choosing what to include in these arrangements, I wanted them to make people think of the wilderness, and of nature. I’ve used lots of twigs and leafy branches, gorgeous deep hydrangeas and even some brambles (which were a little painful to wear!)

Emmi was a fantastic model and saw our vision clearly of how to show off these arrangements.  Jade suggested light colours for the set and hand made the skirt worn in the photos to match the colour scheme, which highlighted the flowers beautifully.

Personally, I’m in love with the glued hydrangeas petals and Japanese maple leafs flowing down Emmi’s back with her knotted pleats towered around her head! The placement was to resemble a gust of wind gently moving the flowing petals along her back, like in autumn when circles of leaves dance around your feet.

This is what inspires me – seasons, movement, the natural rhythm of nature itself. I like to think my wedding work resembles this also and I love to encourage brides to do something a bit out of the ordinary for their flowers, even if it means turning a simple head garland into a twiggy crown with brambles, or instead of a tall centepieces – suspended sticks covered in bright blooms, like trees in the summertime!

We all had so much fun with this photoshoot and I’m still so excited seeing my arrangements in such an elegant style.

Welcome to the first post in our Wedding Insider Series!
We’re handing over to Maggie Mowbray Millinery to tell us how to dress that head with a classy hat that suits. GOLD ADVICE.

• • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • •

One question I often get asked is which styles of hat or headpiece will suit?  Like any piece of clothing, hats and headpieces may not necessarily suit everybody the same, our face shape plays a huge part in design suitability.  However once you determine which styles will work with your features and not against, you will soon discover that you do actually suit hats and headpieces!

How to determine your face shape?  see http://maggiemowbraymillinery.co.uk/hat-fitting-guide/ for our guide!

Oval shaped faces.

You will suit most hat and headpiece styles including large brimmed hats, should your height allow. Brims will look good either floppy or straight, Unless you are tall, brims should be equal to or narrower than your shoulders.  Famous oval face shapes are Kate Middleton & Charlize Theron.

Round shaped face.

wedding tips how to wear a hat

Irregular brims; hats worn at an angle or an angled brim and prominent or high crowns. Designs which have height or vertical detail, such as feathers will help to elongate your face.  Famous round face celebrities include Kate Bosworth & Cameron Diaz.

Rectangle shape face.

wedding tips how to wear a hat

If wearing a hat, opt for designs with full or wide brims but also look for uplifted brims.
Be sure to avoid wearing prominent or high crowns and hats with small brims as they will make your face appear longer. Examples of rectangle faces are Liv Tyler & Jade Jagger.

Square shape face.

wedding tips how to wear a hat

To make your face appear longer and to detract from the width, wear styles which have an irregular brim and preferably with a prominent crown will make your face appear longer.
Another tip is to wear your hat at an angle as this will soften your face.  Celebrities with square faces include Angeline Jolie & Jennifer Anniston.

Triangular shape face.

wedding tips how to wear a hat

Wear styles which add width at the forehead to balance your face shape. It is also more flattering to wear styles with asymmetric brims and high crowns or headpieces with height which will help to draw the eye upwards. Famous triangular face shapes include Victoria Beckham and Sophie Ellis-Bextor.

Heart shape face.

wedding tips how to wear a hat

The most flattering styles are designs with a prominent or large crown which will help make your forehead appear narrower.  However the crown shouldn’t be too large to prevent your chin looking narrower. Designs which can be worn on an angle are also great for this face shape.  Famous heart faces are Katie Holmes & Christina Ricci.

Diamond shape face.

wedding tips how to wear a hat

Choose designs with medium sized brims to avoid making your forehead or chin appear narrower.  Designs with side detail will help visually widen your forehead. Famous diamond face shape Scarlett Johansson.
